This is a bit of a mess, and a “barn find” to boot. Did the barn fall down around it?

Yes, a Packard rat rod, great idea... 55,000 is what the Wikipedia article says for ‘36 120 production, which is probably one of the biggest years Packard ever had, but still. AAAAHHHH

This is what it’s supposed to look like:

True. However, there are probably ways to spend $20k on it and get a $12k car, and have Packard bragging rights. It doesn’t have to be completely awful.

A common (for Packard) lower line car that would cost 75K to turn into a 30K car. What he has is a black hole.

I think this one is a parts car. Sadly, the big fanbase for these has been shuffling off to the big parking lot in the sky for awhile now.

If someone wants one of these, a good bet would be to buy a 20K car, dump 12K into it, and keep it for awhile to enjoy the investment.

Probably true. For all that, it’s not a bad parts car, and those panels that have only surface rust appear to be pretty straight. Getting a slightly more lumpy 120 and melding it with this one in a Manly Combining would be a good strategy. Or just make a hot rod, but old school. Or get another 120 that’s a smaller body, mechanically better and has body issues, fix this one using that as the parts car, and make a hot rod out of that.

That’s a good solution, rod or rat rod it. It’s a common model, so no harm done in modifying it - it will be more interesting than a typical Ford or Chevy. The patina on the sheet metal would appeal to someone.

Still, something in my gut rebels against the phrase “Packard rat rod”. At least as normally conceived. I can see this thing with a chrome delete, leaded, and even with Cragars, but driving around a la rust with some lasercut spiderwebs is a big NOPE NOPE NOPE to me. Actually, I think the best way to do this is as the wealthy dad car version of a hi-boy. Leave the rear fenders off, cut down the front fenders, chop about 3".

I saw one, mostly restored, yesterday. That flat 8 is just an amazing sound.

To me, it’s just a ruined 120 sedan, one of the least valued prewar models. Better than scrapping it anyway. The hi-boy idea could work too - if this car ever makes it back on the road, I suspect it won’t be bone stock.
